Every factory TSMC builds in Arizona, every production line it opens in Kumamoto, Japan, is a deliberate transfer of its most valuable asset—and a step toward extinguishing the very leverage that protects the island in the first place. But here’s what the market isn’t pricing: the transition will not be smooth. The "diversification" effort assumes that the global economy has a decade to adjust. But any disruption in Taiwan—whether from military conflict, natural disaster, or political miscalculation—would still have catastrophic consequences. The world is betting on a gradual transition, but the risk of a sudden cliff remains unhedged.
